As a
Republican, I believe in the philosophy of conservative
thought. I believe that the individual is best suited to
take care of his/her own needs. I believe that local
government is most capable of providing for the needs of
individual Californians. In the State Assembly, I have
worked diligently to pass responsible legislation that
will assist and advance working Californians and their
families, but there is still more work to do.
Here are my thoughts on issues that are
important to me.
Law Enforcement
As a former Orange County Deputy District Attorney and a
reserve police
officer with the Los Angeles Police
Department, law enforcement has always been a top
priority. Currently, I have the honor of serving on the
Assembly Public Safety Committee. In this capacity, I
will continue to work for tougher laws that protect
citizens and the brave men and women who work to provide
us with a safe and peaceful California to enjoy time
with our families, friends and neighbors.
As an ardent advocate for Megan’s Law, I have dedicated
much of my time in Sacramento to strengthen the sex
offender database while making it more accessible. In
2004, I was proud to be a joint author of AB 488, which
put
Megan's Law on the Internet. In addition, I am the
co-author of AB 632,

which will establish a Sex Offender
Management Board. This Board will coordinate state
oversight of sex offenders once they are released back
into our communities. I will continue to support GPS
monitoring for paroled sex offenders and extending the
distance a paroled sex offender can reside to a school
or park.
I
will do my best to ensure that our law enforcement
agencies receive the necessary funding to prevent and
fight crime. My efforts will continue to be geared at
removing criminals from our streets while ensuring that
those already in prison stay behind bars the duration of
their entire prison sentence.
Education
The quality of education for our youth is of extreme
importance to me, both as an Assemblymember and as a
father. Having had first-hand experience with
California’s education system as a former high school
English teacher
and as a School Board Trustee, I
recognize that the youth of today will be the future
leaders of our state and our nation. In Sacramento, I
have worked to repair our school systems, restore
failing systems and preserve the success of California’s
leading K-12 districts, the California State University,
University of California and Community College systems.
Community Colleges remain and will continue to serve as
a vial component and investment to our economy and our
communities by providing our youth, our work force and
seniors access to higher education. However, these
schools have been under-funded for more than a decade. I
have made a personal commitment to make educational
opportunities available to all.
The Economy
As
we all know, the state remains in a serious fiscal
crisis. The recall of the Davis administration has
helped stop the out-of-control spending that got us into
debt. Now, we must pass responsible legislation and
work to balance the budget so we can bring this state
back into fiscal solvency. A balanced budget prevents
any need for tax increases. As anyone with a basic
knowledge of economics knows, raising taxes hurts
businesses especially small- and medium-sized companies.
I
will fight to keep our spending fiscally sound and our
policies based on wise, time-tested and conservative
ideas. California’s working families should not be
penalized for the irresponsible spending that has
plagued Sacramento for the past five years.
I
echo the statements of President Bush: We must work to
promote an ethically sound and secure business
environment that is safe for investors and protects
California’s consumers.
